Lifestyle Balance Sheet - Work

Use the worksheet below as you consider the following questions about work. What type of work do you do? How did you choose your current employer? Do you enjoy your work for itself or is it just a paycheck? Do you like your boss? Do you like the people you work with? Do you see yourself working in the same job and organization five years from now? Write your thoughts in section A of the worksheet.

A. Define your work:

Given your answers to the above questions, how satisfied are you with your work? Use a 0 to 100 scale to rate your satisfaction. A rating of 100 means, "I am totally satisfied; it's the best thing in my life." A zero means, "I absolutely hate it all the time." Place your rating in the space provided in section B of the worksheet.

B. Rate your work satisfaction (0=none, 100-high):

How important is your work to your lifestyle? Could you cut it out of your life today and not need or miss it? Rate its importance on the same 0 to 100 scale. place your rating in the space provided in section C on the worksheet.

C. Rate the importance of your work (0=none, 100-high):

How much psychological and physical energy does your work demand of you? How much stress does it generate? How exhausted do you feel at the end of your workweek? Again use a 0 to 100scale,but thistime you need to rate the percentage of your total psychophysical energy that your work consumes each week. To figure this out, consider how much energy it consumes in relation to the other parts of your life. The total of all the energy ratings for the nine parts of your lifestyle cannot exceed 100. If you fill out the forms online we will keep track of how much of the 100 energy units you have left to use as you move from worksheet to worksheet. Place your rating in the space provided in section D on the worksheet.

D. Percentage of psychophysical energy consumed by work (0 to 100%):

Now you're ready to list what, if anything, you would like to change about your work. Do you want to change employer, position, or get a promotion? Be as specific as you can. If you know you want to make some kind of change but cannot specify it, put that down. This could be important later.

none
uncertain

How important are making these changes (or specifying what they are) to you? Use the 0 to 100 scale, where 100 equals "critically important, my lifestyle depends upon it," to 0 equals "no importance at all." Record your answer in section E.

E. Rate the importance of these changes/uncertainty (0=none; 100=high):

When you have finished filling in the worksheet, your "work net" number will be calculated at the bottom.
