ERP FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about ERP Is ERP a cure all?
No, not alone. It has been concluded that ERP is a more effective treatment tool if it is used in conjunction with a recovery support group (12-step or Non 12-step) and some form of psychotherapy (individual or group). ERP works together with these other forms of help to insure a sound recovery from addiction.
Will my craving level continue to increase over the sessions?
At first, your craving levels may be high, due to the anticipatory anxiety you may encounter from these sessions. However, as you become more familiar with the rationale, process, cards, and mainly after you gain self-confidence with beating the addiction, your body will become less reactive to the stimulus.
What do I do if during the ERP session, I become overwhelmed or anxious?
Please put all of the ERP photo cards away and begin to complete the relaxation exercises written in the book. Please feel free to add other relaxation techniques that may work to reduce your stress and anxieties. Call a friend if necessary for support.
What can I do if I experience cravings or anxiety after my ERP session?
Remember that you are in control over the addiction. Suggestions include keeping yourself busy (ride out the craving wave), go to a meeting, exercise, talk to someone, go for a walk, go somewhere safe, write in a journal, listen to music, recite your ERP cards, or call your therapist.
Can I combine ERP with other forms of treatment for substance abuse?
Yes, you can combine ERP with many other forms of substance abuse treatment. These include twelve step programs, support groups, group therapy, Revia an anti-craving medication (for alcohol) and psychotherapy.
